چکیده

We have detected EUV emission from the globular cluster NGC 1851, using the Deep Survey Photometer aboard the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE). The minimum EUV luminosity implied by our detection is ∼1035 – 1036 ergs s−1, for a distance and reddening appropriate to NGC 1851. This is only the second detection of a globular cluster at EUV energies. If this flux is due to the cluster LMXB X0512-401, then the observed EUV luminosity is likely to be comparable to the 2–10 keV X-ray luminosity of the LMXB. With the detection of EUV emission from M15, these observations suggest that the EUV flux of LMXBs in general may represent a sizable fraction of their total bolometric luminosity. However, additional observations are needed to conclusively show that these cluster LMXBs (X0512-401 and AC211) indeed dominate the cluster EUV emission. Finally, we compare our NGC 1851 measurement with the EUVE detection of the X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 during outburst, and show that these objects appear to have comparable EUV luminosities.

1 Xmm-newton Results on the Ultracompact Low Mass X–ray Binary 4u 1850-087 in the Globular Cluster Ngc 6712

We report on preliminary results from our XMM-Newton observation of the Low Mass X-ray Binary 4U 1850-087, located in the galactic globular cluster NGC 6712. It is an ultracompact binary system, with an orbital period of 20.6 min. In previous low-resolution X-ray observations 4U 1850-087 displayed a soft excess residual around 0.7 keV, possibly indicative of the presence of a high Ne/O ratio, a...

There are extraordinarily few far ultraviolet observations of RR Lyrae stars in the literature. We present Hubble Space Telescope FUV (∼ 1600Å) imaging of the core of the globular cluster NGC 1851. Eleven new variables whose light curves are consistent with those of RR Lyr stars are discovered, increasing the total number of RR Lyr known in this cluster by a substantial amount. In agreement wit...

Chandra Observation of the Globular Cluster Ngc 6440 and the Nature of Cluster X-ray Luminosity Functions

As part of our campaign to determine the nature of the various source populations of the low-luminosity globular cluster X-ray sources, we have obtained a Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S3 image of the globular cluster NGC 6440. We detect 24 sources to a limiting luminosity of ∼2×1031 erg s−1 (0.5–2.5 keV) inside the cluster’s half-mass radius, all of which lie within ∼2 core radii of the clust...

We have used the Green Bank Telescope to observe the millisecond pulsar PSR J0514−4002A on 43 occasions spread over 2 years. This 5-ms pulsar is located in the globular cluster NGC 1851; it belongs to a binary system and has a highly eccentric (e = 0.888) orbit. We have obtained a phase-coherent timing solution for this object, including very precise position, spin and orbital parameters. The p...
